Ammo magazine, Nick Deakin letterpress print

We have collaborated with Ammo Magazine and illustrator Nick Deakin to produce this limited edition letterpress print. Nick’s bold line work makes a wonderful impression into Saunders 425gsm cotton, chosen  for it’s weight and texture.

We converted Nick’s digital artwork to colour separations, outputted to film and made our photopolymer plates. The smallest detail in the illustration is transferred faithfully to the plates which are mounted on aluminum bases to type height and locked up in the chase. We printed each plate/colour simultaneously on 2 Heidelberg platens achieving accurate registration. Nick supplied Pantone colour refs and the inks were hand mixed to match.

The A5, 2 colour print is signed by the artist and comes with latest lumberjack themed magazine. The print is limited to 500 so be quick!

Candykiller Beast letterpress print

We were thrilled when Candykiller aka Brian Taylor called on Blush to produce his latest ‘Beast’ print. We have worked with Candykiller before, printing the 5th Anniversary limited edition prints. Candykiller’s illustrations print beautifully on the press and Brian’s attention to detail and technical ability when it comes to artwork is first class.

Photopolymer plate
We printed the Beast on 300gsm cotton paper on a Heidelberg platen press, tweeting live at each stage of the production, from platemaking to trimming. The first stage of the job was to prepare Brian’s artwork for print. The artwork was supplied digitally and we check the file before creating the separations. Each colour is a separate pass through the press, so once through for the red and through again for the black. This means we would need two plates.

We mix the ink to a Pantone ref supplied by the artist and ink up the press. We decided to add the rider roller to give an even and consistent spread of ink across the image and to prevent ‘ghosting’.

Plate on press
The plate is attached to a base to bring it up to type height (.918″) and locked up in the chase then locked into the press.

Comparing prints
We ink up the press and pull some initial prints to check for registration, ink coverage and impression. We also check the print for any defects in the plate.

Platen printing
Once we are happy with we run the sheets through the press.

Inking up the plate
After the first colour run we wash-up the press and prepare for the second colour. Change plates, ink up for black pass and reload the paper on the press.

Checking prints
We pull some prints and check once again for impression, ink coverage and registration.

Printing the black
Then run the sheets through and print the black plate.

The final prints
The final prints are checked and trimmed on the guillotine before packing.

You can see more production shots on our Flickr pages and follow us on Twitter for news and updates on future live letterpress tweets.

The prints are available to purchase from the Candykiller online store.

Deeply Impressed is a new website dedicated to showcasing letterpress and hot foil printing in the UK. The sites creator wanted to send out a promotional card to coincide with the launch of the website and of course it had to be letterpress! We discussed papers and ideas to help create a simple effective print to whet the appetite, give an idea of what letterpress is and how it feels.

The A6 cards are printed on 425gsm Saunders 100% cotton.

We tweeted the print run live on Twitter, photographing and posting each stage of the job. You can see and read the results on our Flickr pages.

Blind Embossing

Embossed logo on 300gsm 100% cotton paperLetterpress printing creates a debossed impression into the paper. The inked plate is pressed into the paper leaving the design or type recessed. We can also print without any ink, a blind deboss. A simply and very effective technique.

The example above shows a blind emboss on 300gsm cotton paper. The image is raised, pushed from back to front. To do this correctly we use a male and female die to create an image that is sharp and crisp.

1 Colour Business Cards

1 colour business card1 colour business card1 colour business card1 colour business cardJohn Henry called on blush°° to print his business cards. We discussed which papers would be most suitable as he wanted a really deep impression. After seeing John’s artwork we recommended Saunders 425gsm. A beautiful soft white cotton paper heavier than the average business card but not too thick to take up too much room in his wallet!

Getting the right amount of ink was critical for this design. We had to have enough coverage for the block at the top of the card without over inking the finer typography at the bottom.

Silver Anniversary Invitation

Silver Anniversay invitation inside detail

Silver Anniversay invitation inside detail

We were asked by Darren at Do Creative to print this stunning silver anniversary invitation for The Royal Oak Furniture Company. The cover has the simple but extremely effective idea of age rings of a tree surrounding the ‘25′.

Darren wanted this image debossed deep into the paper but we suggested we run a very, very, very faint tint rather than no ink at all. So we ran a few test prints with no ink and also some varying tints. We felt this tint gave the impression an warmer feel.

The invitation details were printed inside with the same tint and a second colour taken from the PMS supplied. The #EasterEgg fine delicate detail of the logo held well under the extreme pressure of our printing press and the debossed tint was a strong contrast to the second colour.

The invitations were printed on our 1969 Heidelberg platen onto 300gsm 100% cotton paper, 2 sides. Dimensions: 290 x 145 with a centre crease.
